Revenge: Single, Double, Triple
Definition
Revenge is defined as the opportunity of a team who previously lost to its opponent to ‘avenge’ its loss in their next meeting.
Usage
Revenge is a great angle to consider in sports gambling. It is most prevalently used in college sports and the National Basketball Association. In college, where emotions and pride run high, revenge games are the norm. College coaches have to be careful to not blow out their opposition, for if they are to meet again (such as the following year), they will incur the wrath of a pissed off college team. Rivalries also intensify when there is revenge.
Emotional Revenge
The term ‘revenge’ has many levels to it. Emotional revenge is perhaps the most potent—it occurs when the team seeking revenge got humiliated in a previous meeting with its current opponent. In this type of revenge, such a team will usually cover the spread and if they are the underdog, they will usually win the game. This is of course dependent that the team is able to exact revenge.
Basic Revenge
In this type of revenge, a team has simply lost to its opponent in its last meeting. This type of vengeance is stronger when the two teams are division / conference rivals. There may or may not be any emotions attached to this type of revenge.
Single Revenge
This happens when a team loses to another and are now facing the same team. This type of revenge happens between National Basketball Association (NBA) intercoastal matchups (Western team v. Eastern team).
Double Revenge
As the name implies, double revenge occurs when a team has lost its previous two meetings to the same opponent and is now currently facing said opponent.
Triple Revenge
This is perhaps the strongest of all revenge angles. This happens late in the season (usually the NBA) and matches up division rivals. It is pretty difficult to beat a professional team three straight times, thus the team seeking this type of revenge will have all its guns blazing for the matchup. This situation improves if the team seeking revenge is vying for a playoff spot and their opponent has secured its playoff position.
Summary
In closing, revenge is best served cold. In the sports world, teams do get revenge if they are capable of exacting it. College sports offers the best place to back a team seeking revenge, although the NBA also offers great opportunities to back revenge-seeking teams. In the NBA, one can consider single, double, or even triple revenge (the strongest of the three).
