Run Down
Definition
The term ‘run down’ in sports gambling is the exact listing of all the lines for a specific sport, date, or time.
A note about playing all the games on the board
Sportsbooks offer a lot of games. To the novice sports gambler, this may seem like a smorgasbord of games. It is comparable to a kid in a candy shop. But, as the old adage goes, “moderation is the key”. If one attempts to play all the games on the board, one should be ready to lose. One would have to win at a 55% winning percentage, considering a standard –110 juice on all pointspread games. If one decides to blindly bet on a particular type of bet (the favorite or the underdog), there is a danger of a ‘favorite’ day or an ‘underdog’ day. One could potential bet the favorite in a morning game, and if it lost roll it to an afternoon favorite, and if that lost roll it to an evening favorite—but this type of betting is yet very dangerous. Although there are no documented occurrences of this phenomena, take it from the author. Some days are just ‘dog’ days, while others are ‘favorite’ days.
Some general observations
Morning games can be tough. Some teams fair unusually well during the day time, while other teams do quite poorly. If a sporting event matches up a ‘morning team’ against an ‘evening team’, the sports bettor should bet accordingly. In the National Football League (NFL), it has been profitable throughout the years to fade West coast team playing at 1:00 PM Eastern. The West coast players’ circadian clocks are still set in the Pacific time zone, while they are playing in the East—literally, they are still asleep during this time. Thus, 1:00 PM Eastern games feel more like 10:00 AM games to these types of players.
National Basketball Association (NBA) teams who are at home for Sunday evening games usually fairly poorly. An explanation for this phenomena is seen because Sunday is usually a family day. Home team players attend to their families on such days and may not be entirely too focused for their upcoming home game. On the flip side, the opposition is away from home, and thus can be more focused on the task at hand. They are free from the distractions from family and friends. In all, fade NBA teams at home during Sunday evening games.
Summary
In closing, a run down is the listing of all the lines for a particular sport, date, or time.
